One of the major trends this season is denim, which I find slightly odd–isn’t denim always in? Perhaps not so in the high fashion world, but certainly here in the Midwest. However, taking a closer look at this trend, denim has been getting a major makeover lately. From jeans embellished with pearls to intricate, embroidered patterns and uneven hems, denim really has taken on a life of its own, and the best part is it’s such an easy trend to sprinkle in with your existing wardrobe. My favorite variation of this is the two-toned pieces brands are coming out with!
Jake bought me this cool pair called The Patchwork Skinny from Free People for my birthday, and I couldn’t be more in love with their slouchy laid-back look. While I chose to pair the jeans with a sleeveless, burgundy top and floral kimono for a more casual outfit, I could easily see adding a sharp buttondown and pumps for a night out on the town.
The only problem I’ve had with these jeans–and really most jeans–is the size. We had to return the first pair to go up in size, since the waistline runs small. My pair is actually one to two sizes larger than I usually wear. While the waistline is now quite comfortable, I do wish that the jeans were slightly more fitted in the thigh area, but I’m hopeful that with a few washes, they’ll fit just right!
However, one of the best things about these jeans is the quality. The denim has a nice weight to it, is thicker than most, and is comfortable at the same time. They are not stretch, and although that might account for the unforgiving waist line, it does mean that they wont become baggy throughout the day. I’m all for that!
When styling this outfit, I chose to tuck in my shirt to create a defined waistline. The looser fit of these jeans paired with a flowy kimono would make for a rather baggy ensemble had I left the shirt untucked. Being on the shorter side, that wouldn’t be so flattering on me. Rolling up the hems of the pants allows for the tiniest peek of ankle between these wrapped faux leather boots and jeans. Again, this prevents the outfit from becoming a wash of loose, billowy textures verging on sloppy. Instead, the final result is tasteful and balanced boho chic.
What’s your favorite take on the denim trend? I’d love to know!
