Upping My Hair Care Wardrobe with R+Co

For the longest time, I’ve operated under the assumption that shampoo and conditioner don’t make that much of a difference. At least, not enough to warrant spending much money on them. Surely some brands do a better job than others of cleansing and conditioning the hair, but I never felt the need to go beyond the drugstore aisle for my hair washing needs. After all, it just gets rinsed off after a minute or two anyway, right?

But, recently, I started to feel like my go-to drugstore shampoo and conditioner (OGX Coconut Milk, if you’re curious) just weren’t doing enough. My hair had been feeling limp and heavy not long after washing, and it would be greasy by night. My strands also felt weak and easily breakable. I think, perhaps, that I started noticing the shortcomings of my routine because my fine-textured hair is getting long again. Not wanting to go short, I decided it was high time to up my shampooing regimen.

Enter, R+Co’s Dallas Biotin Shampoo and Conditioner. My mom has used products from this brand sporadically, and I had tried them a couple times while taking a shower at my parent’s house. I remembered loving the scent and noticing my hair felt extra nice afterwards, too. Based on these past experiences, I was excited to try using them as my full-time shampoo and conditioner to see if they would make difference in the overall quality of my hair. I’ve been using both products now for several weeks, and I can say without a shred of doubt, they are worth every penny.

Two dime-sized squeezes of Dallas, one for the front of my head and one for the back. That’s all the shampoo I need to adequately clean my hair. One of the reasons I’ve always shied away from spending much on shampoo is because I thought I had to use SO much. The other thing is, more expensive shampoos are usually less sudsy. I know that’s technically a good thing, but I have always found that more suds mean the product is easier to distribute throughout the hair without tugging or pulling. Then, I watched Brad Mondo’s hair washing hacks, and woah…mind blown. I learned that you only need two dimes worth of shampoo and to focus on cleaning the scalp, not on covering all of your hair. He also discusses the best way to massage the product into your scalp to prevent breakage. I’ve been using all of these techniques with Dallas, and I can say that my hair has never felt cleaner after a shampoo.

The Dallas conditioner is equally lovely. It’s lightweight but deeply hydrating, and I’d say I get away with using probably a nickel’s worth for my hair. I typically apply conditioner to the ends and then work it up to about 3/4 the length of my hair. My hair tends to get greasy pretty quickly, so I’m careful not to overhydrate my scalp. Both the shampoo and conditioner have the same intoxicatingly delicious scent, Dark Waves, which is described by R + Co as “a romantic blend of cardamom, pineapple, tangerine, lavender, bamboo, and blonde woods.” I even got a compliment from the hairstylist on how good my hair smelled when getting it trimmed a few weeks ago.

The biggest surprise of all is that since using the Dallas shampoo and conditioner, I haven’t had to wash my hair as often. While I previously shampooed on a daily basis, I now can get away with doing so every two days, merely rinsing my hair with water inbetween. My hair doesn’t get as oily as it did before, and I’ve noticed that it stays bouncier and fuller longer. Score!

In addition to the Dallas shampoo and conditioner, I’ve also been loving some of R + Co’s styling products. The Park Avenue Blow Out Balm has quickly become a favorite. I find it just gives my hair a beautiful combination of smoothness, volume, and swing when blow drying. It’s definitely one I’ll repurchase. Then, the Balloon Dry Volume Spray adds just enough volume and texture without weighing the hair down or imparting an unpleasant texture. It’s the perfect finishing spray for my fine hair.

  1. R+Co shampoo is so nice! I’m glad this is working for you so well, I’ll definitely keep the Dallas version in mind. I have the Television set and it smells amazing. I just wish it was more affordable.
