Pat McGrath Labs is still one of the newest luxury beauty brands on the block. If you’re not familiar with it, this is the line created by the legendary Pat McGrath, whose work has been featured on the cover of Vogue numerous times. Her work is artful, precise, iconic, and editorial: qualities that are evident in her makeup line, too.
Over the past few months, I have been wearing one of Pat McGrath’s lipsticks paired with one of her lip liners (a combo given to me by my husband) pretty consistently. They are both formulated beautifully and are a treat to wear together. So, long story short, I really like them. But, let’s get into the details!
Permagel Ultra Lip Pencil in “Bare Rose”
When it comes to lip liners, I tend to prefer ones that are not too creamy in texture. I actually like when they lean more waxy so that the product stays put. After all, the main purpose of lip liner is to make lipstick last longer, right? At the same time, I despise when the product is so firm that it doesn’t apply smoothly and feels dry on the lips.
MAC and Milani both make pencils that fit my requirements really well. They’re also much more affordable than Pat McGrath’s rendition. So the question is, if I can find a really great lip liner that is $18 or under, can a $25 pencil be worth it? Absolutely.
Pat McGrath’s lip pencil hits all the right traits. It’s comfortable, extends the longevity of lipstick, and does not budge in the slightest. Yet, it applies smoothly and feels like nothing on the lips. Though it does all of these things at least as well as, if not better, than my beloved MAC and Milani lip liners, where it really excels is color payoff and hue. The color I’m wearing, Bare Rose, has such rich payoff that I could totally wear it without lipstick. It is truly a perfect “pinky-nude” that would go as well with a true nude lipstick as it would a true pink.

LuxeTrance Lipstick in “Sextrology”
Although expensive, this lipstick is super long-lasting. I find I can go an entire day without reapplying, if I want to. It will fade slightly throughout the day, but in such a way that it doesn’t look bad. If I want to revive the color, a single reapplication suffices. This is great because I’d rather not have to reapply more than once when a lipstick costs $38 per tube, thank you very much.
Where this lipstick stands out is how plump it makes the lips look. I didn’t realize the difference until I compared the lip-liner-only picture (above) to the ones with lipstick (below). It provides a healthy sheen without coming off as shiny. Although the formula is marketed as a cream, I find this this has more of a satin-matte finish. It’s not really matte, but it’s not as shiny as I’d typically expect a cream lipstick to be. That being said, I really enjoy the finish. It is certainly unique.
Once again, the color is spot on. Looking at the picture on Sephora, it seems like the shade I’m wearing would be a bright bubble gum pink. In reality, it has a toned-down brightness and is truly a neutral, everyday pink.
I’d be remiss not to mention the packaging. By now, it’s iconic. I can’t deny, I really like pulling this one out of my purse. It looks classy and expensive.
Based on the performance of this lipstick and liner combo, I absolutely want to try more Pat McGrath lip products in the future. Her matte formula, in particular, looks really nice, and I’ve heard that it’s insanely comfortable to wear. Recently, she’s come out with some lipsticks in different color tubes, which look gorgeous. I have my eye on the blue and gold one.
